About this deal

The best multi-tools are compact little miracle-workers that can make trailside repairs a doddle – of course, that’s reliant on you remembering to bring it with you. Which is why multi-tools that are stored on-bike are handy as they’re always to hand for those trailside tweaks. The only improvement we would like to see with the Stash Tool is adding an 8mm hex key. Nowadays, most bikes have an 8mm bolt somewhere, and with all other sizes accounted for, it would be the final piece to a well-rounded tool. The Stash RT tool does include an 8mm hex key; however, it does not include spoke keys or a flat head screwdriver. The Stash Multi-Tool is similar to other steerer tube mounted tools we’ve seen, but with its own unique design. Instead of tapping the steerer tube like One Up’s EDC Tool, which I consider invasive, the Stash Multi-Tool uses a small plate at the bottom of the fork crown, attached to a long bolt, which secures to the bottom of a storage sleeve within the upper portion of the steerer tube. This requires the removal of the star nut within the steerer tube, but ultimately provides the same function by preloading the headset bearings. The kit comes with two lower fork crown caps for tapered or straight steerer tubes and three different bolt lengths, depending on the distance from the lower fork crown opening to the top of the stem. This measurement must be between 150mm an 240mm, otherwise the provided bolts won’t be long enough. A few manufacturers have been trying to achieve this but have struggled to compete against the OneUp EDC tool. Granite has created the stash tool, there own take on tool storage within your bike. Like OneUps tool the stash fits inside your steerer but without having the need to thread your steerer or buy a OneUp stem which ultimately costs a lot more!. New version of the Granite Design Stash RT fits more forks, has a better pop-out function, and can accept Garmin/Wahoo/Bryton devices mounted via optional Scope RT cover. Closed Hello!

The Wolf Tooth Encase Chain + Tire Plug Multi-Tool is meant to be a multi-tasker, but it’s a clever one at that. Initially, the kit seemed too large to fit in the curve of a drop bar, however, once the design of the pivoting tool was placed correctly, the installation was consistently a breeze. Hiding tools in your bar-ends and steerer tube is nothing new. These days you can hide pumps, multi-tools, tubeless repair kits, and more inside various nooks and crannies on your bike. For the most part, they are set-and-forget and keep handy everyday parts of your tool kit easily accessible and close at hand. We’ve tested options from Bontrager, Giant, OneUp, Dynaplug, and Granite Design—a company that has made stashable multi-tools its business with a full line of steerer tube and bar-end-mounted repair kits. a) If we have sent you the incorrect bicycle, we will cover the cost of collection and delivery of the correct model. Unlike some other steerer-stored multi-tools (OneUp’s EDC being the obvious example), the Stash RT doesn’t require you to take thread-tapper to your fork’s steerer. Multi-taskers - Many of the best plugger tools we tested were built to do that one thing, while others are built into multi-tools or entire tool systems. Are you happy with your existing multi-tool or other elements of your flat kit? If not then consider these multi-taskers as a clever way to build out your tool arsenal. The Granite Stash RT presents a simple installation solution by eliminating the need for complex steerer tube mechanicals. This tool housing simplifies the process considerably. Gone are the days of tapping and struggling with installations. Now, all you have to do is remove the star nut and insert the tool housing directly into the steerer tube. The quality aluminium all-in-one kit comes with a reamer and fork, medium-sized strips and two different end caps so you can choose to fit the stash tool in your handlebars, steerer tube or hollow crank for a small weight addition of 35 grams. First off you will need to remove the star nut from the bottom of the steerer tube. The best way to do this is to put the bike on the ground, remove the headset cap and bolt, and then hammer the star nut through from the top. We used an old, long screwdriver with a rubber mallet. This may seem a little scary if you’ve never done this before as it does feel like you are about to ruin your bike, but trust us, this needs to happen. Installation is simple and is just as easy as tightening your headset. Once your star nut is removed or in the new case of a new fork, you don’t have one slide the tool carrier half into the top side of your steerer and place the bolt through. Once placed you can now place the plug into the bottom of your steerer and start to tighten the unit together. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! As with preloading your headset with a star nut, you are replacing that with the tool so treat this system as the same as if you were tightening the headset with the star nut.

Freaking magnets dude. Bottom bung Really shorts stems may require a spacer above the stem to give the swivelling lid sufficient clearance, as is the case here with the rinky-dink 20mm Pacenti P-Dent stem The tolerance of the multi-tool inside the tool carrier was exact, and the o-ring created a tight seal that eliminated any rattling, water contamination, or the chance of the tool ejecting mid-ride. However, pulling out the multi-tool required some finger strength to decompress the o-ring. On a few occasions, we yanked so hard on the top cap that when it released, we tossed the tool down the trail. While we always want peace of mind that our on-bike tools are secure, the Stash Tool was more challenging to remove than the SWAT tool we used prior with its spring-loaded system. Granite sell the Stash multi-tool, the bar-end-based Stash chain tool and Stash plug tool all individually. This allows you to mix and match as you please. The tool is spring-loaded tool and pops its little head up out of its recess when the top cover is rotated out of the way. Granite Design Stash RT is a two-way ratchet wrench with nine tool bits. The revised housing now fits all modern forks with tapered steerer tubes, even those that have ovalised inner.

Verdict

Similar tool kits on the market are built around a thin and small multi-tool. Stash RT’s ratchet wrench is longer thus gives more leverage. The two-way ratchet function makes accessing bolts in tight spaces much easier. If you find an item at a lower price with another commercial internet retailer, you will receive it from us at the same price, provided the conditions listed in the link are met. The spoke key tool was an excellent addition that performed as intended and fitted tightly on nipples with enough leverage to add tension. We lost our valve core remover shortly before receiving the Stash Tool, so it has received more use than any other tool in the kit and has functioned without a fuss. Things That Could Be Improved
